Department of English
Since inception of the college, in the year 2010, the Department of English has been effectively functional. The Department stands focused to its Ideals in imparting knowledge and preparing the students towards achieving academic excellence through the acquisition of core competence in language skills in relation to its application & relevance for engineering professionals, and also in giving students practice for developing the four basic skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
Objectives
- To impart a salient and sound linguistic competence and the ability to communicate effectively in English
- To trigger learner enthusiasm and nurture students’ interest and passion in the study and practice of languages, as part of the curriculum
- To enable the students to emerge confident and successful professionals capable of excellent enunciation and communicative competence in interpersonal and operational work situations
- To equip students with Business English proficiency so as to obtain credentials in Business English from the University of Cambridge
Apart from offering these regular courses, the department has several initiatives to promote the communication skills of the students. It provides guidance and support to several literary events through ‘literary club’ CREST. These clubs involve in activities such as writing fiction/poems, organizing talks by eminent personalities from varied backgrounds, putting up plays, speaking competitions, and conducting events for the benefit of students to improve their personality traits as well as communication skills.
In 2014, the department has launched a yearlong training in communication skills for the benefit of all the first year students in collaboration with Cambridge English and the British Council.
BUSINESS ENGLISH CERTIFICATE COURSE
The department of English has inaugurated BEC, the Business English Certificate Course in our institution from the academic year 2013-2014. The Business English Certificate (BEC) course which is an internationally recognized qualification builds confidence in students to use English in a work environment combined with the ability to work successfully in a cross-cultural environment. It opens doors to higher education, improves employment opportunities and because they are globally recognized, can increase learner’s choices for study or work. Students will be trained by our faculty members from the department of English who have got specially trained by the British Council at Chennai.
Laboratory
The department of English aims to promote skills in writing, reading, listening and speaking. It also tenaciously adopts innovative teaching methods to tackle students (a) with rural background (b) lacking fluency in English (c) whose medium of instruction has been the regional language. The Department relentlessly pursues quality education in communication skills and Technical English caters to the needs of the students of budding Engineers. The department has a well equipped Language Lab in an air-conditioned environment. It has adequate software to provide training to students in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
Established in 2010, the Language Laboratory of the Department of English has several self-learning packages, Cambridge Advanced Dictionary, English Pronunciation Dictionary, K-Van solutions-CALL & ICS and Advanced English Communications Lab to hone the communication skills of the learners entrusted to our care. A full-fledged computer-based laboratory, it now has a capacity to accommodate 120 learners at a time and another 120 for Interactive Communication Skills Lab.
The internet facility made available enables the students to utilize the resources on the innumerable language-learning websites which in turn widen their knowledge and expand their potential, thus developing their listening, reading and presentation skills, and enlightening their awareness of group discussions required for the Communication Skills Laboratory examination, and the interview skills thereafter.
